Ottawa Family Photography - Home is Where The Heart Is
There is no competition. When it comes to my favourite locations to shoot a photography session, it's at a client's home. I love the challenges that come with it. I never know what kind of light I'll encounter. I go in blind, not knowing what the home looks like and I have to be quick on my feet to assess all the variables involved in creating the images in my mind's eye.
Aside from all the technical and logistical components involved, there are more important reasons why I love it so much. Those reasons are also very dear to my clients.
Home sweet home. Whether indoors, in your yard or taking a stroll down the street, it's home. A photo session at home means you can have a wide variety of images. The two images below were both taken during the same session! Furthermore, wardrobe changes can be done in the blink of an eye. That in and of itself is so much fun! The kids can splash in the muddy puddles outside, and then change for indoor photos too.
2. Convenience & Less Stress
Diaper changes? Fresh baby spit-up on your shoulder? Baby is getting sleepy? No problem. Go change that diaper, get a new shirt or put baby to sleep. You're at home, after all. In addition, eliminating the need to pack up the family and rush to be on-time to the session plays a HUGE part in reducing stress for a photography session. I am coming to you, so I will be on time (unless of course I encounter a hungry herd of T-Rex's, then I can't guarantee anything). If I arrive and your child isn't fully dressed, so what? It's alright. Let them prance around in their super hero underpants, and with chocolate milk moustaches. It's part of family life. I'll be there for at least an hour, so I will capture all those fun little moments that come together to tell your story.
3. Your Space & the Little Details
Your home is the most important space in your life. It's where you sleep, where you enjoy meals with your family and where you unwind at the end of a hard day. It's where you tuck your little one's into bed and where you sit at the table colouring with your kids. Your home is where company gathers for special events, summer bbq's and birthdays. Sounds like the perfect setting for your photography session.
There are so many little details in your home that tell a story, so it's important to capture that on camera too. One of these days, that moon and star mobile you have hanging above your child's crib will be stored away somewhere never to be seen again. Then there's the ballet slippers your daughter has in her room that she wears every Saturday morning for dance class. What about the special DIY project you made for the nursery? All these little things are really big things, and deserve a little spot in your photo album.
4. Snakes, cats & birds, oh my!
Ok, so there are no photos of snakes or birds below. That's because I haven't had a client who owned one yet, but I REALLY look forward to that! A home session can include any pet that cannot be taken on-location to a session. Dogs have a lot of freedom outside of the home, but not so for our other furry (scaly or feathery) family friends. Of course, pups at home can also be included in the photos.
My home, is very small. I can't tell you how many creative expletives have come out of my mouth while cooking in the tiny space that is my kitchen. Our living room has to double as a playroom and the narrow space at our front door makes for an organizational nightmare when it comes to jackets, hats and mittens. However, our home is filled with joy and love, and our space is OUR happy place. One day we will leave this place behind, and I will be so happy that I've captured so many memories in this home.
