Ottawa Family Photographer - Julie & Kyle Turris
The gorgeous weather is here and it's time for outdoor photography sessions! I don't know about you, but I am really excited. Just a week before this session, I was walking in that very field with rain boots because of the mucky and wet ground. Mucky no more!
I had the pleasure of meeting the Turris family six months ago when they invited me into their home for a documentary session. So already they knew how casual and free-flowing the session would be. This really isn't about a photography session as much as it is about enjoying play time as a family. Playing in the field together and enjoying the lovely weather really comes naturally. All the while, I was standing by capturing all the little smiles, the tender moments, and the laughs.
These are all really important moments to capture "on film", because they will highlight a milestone in their lives. A new chapter begins in August, when they will be welcoming a new baby boy to the family. The first chapter began in 2008 when they met while they were in university. How sweet is that?!
Eventually Kyle was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes, while Julie stayed to finish her degree. But, love conquers all and even with the distance they maintained that very special relationship which grew into the beautiful family they are today. Honestly, I can totally relate, because my husband and I dated long-distance for 4 years! But that's a story for another day.
Seeing as how this was our second photography session, I loved seeing how much their children had grown in just a short 6 months! Their baby daughter is now standing and active, and their son was very chatty with me. YES!! It certainly helps when kids are encouraged to be themselves and just explore.
Now, I am often asked about what to wear for a photography session. You can read my previous blog post on that here, but generally I always encourage my clients to wear comfortable clothing that suits their everyday life. To prepare for our most recent photo session, they simply raided the family closets to find just the right clothes that suited their family. chose light and dark colour tones that would pair well with one another, and also looked great with the scenery. You just can't go wrong with cotton and denim!
To get the beautiful glow of light around the subjects, the session was held just before sunset. This meant photographing a 9 month old baby right at bedtime! To make this more convenient, and to avoid any long car rides (cause you never know what can happen in the car with two kids), I suggested a park just 5 minutes from their home. They really appreciated that. So once the session was over, they were able to get back home in no time, and get that bedtime routine under way. I'll be the first to tell you that you don't need a fancy shmancy location for great photos.
When planning the session Julie asked if we could take some photos with a "gender reveal" theme. I truly believe that less is more, so we chose to use a balloon. No bells or whistles needed. So, when nearing the end of the session I got the balloon from my car and their son's big sparkly blue eyes got even bigger! Guess who got to take the balloon home when all was said and done? "B", as they so affectionately call him.
Now, normally during the NHL off-season, they visit family in Minnesota and Vancouver. However, due to the new addition arriving in August, family will be visiting them here in Ottawa. Something tells me they will be very excited to do so!
Congratulations Julie and Kyle on your growing family. I hope to meet and photograph your new little man in the future.
